Overview #
As of 2024, WhatsApp has tightened restrictions on VoIP numbers, and WhatsApp Business no longer allows registration using VoIP numbers for new accounts. This applies to both the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) unless your number is provisioned through an approved provider.
🚫 What Changed? #
Previously, many users successfully registered WhatsApp Business accounts with VoIP numbers using call verification. However, WhatsApp has now:
- Blocked VoIP numbers from being used for new registrations
- Enforced checks that prevent non-mobile numbers from completing verification
- Allowed only mobile (non-VoIP) numbers or landlines in some approved regions
- Limited the WhatsApp Business API to numbers from authorized Business Solution Providers (BSPs)
✅ What Still Works (with Restrictions) #
Use Case | Status |
---|---|
WhatsApp Business (new setup) | ❌ VoIP not allowed |
WhatsApp Business (existing VoIP accounts) | ✅ May continue working unless flagged |
WhatsApp Business API via BSP | ✅ VoIP allowed if provisioned by provider |
WhatsApp (consumer app) | ❌ VoIP not supported |
🧭 Your Options Now #
If you’re trying to use WhatsApp with a business number:
Option 1: Use a Mobile Number #
- Best for small businesses or teams needing app-based messaging.
- Must be a real SIM-enabled mobile number.
Option 2: Register Through an Official BSP #
- BSPs (Business Solution Providers) like Twilio, 360dialog can onboard your number, even VoIP, through the WhatsApp Business API.
- These providers handle provisioning, hosting, and API integration.
Option 3: Use Landline Numbers (Sometimes Works) #
- Some landlines (not VoIP) can still be registered with the WhatsApp Business App via call verification.
- Results vary by region and provider.
🔍 Common Errors You May See #
Error Message | Meaning |
---|---|
“This phone number is not supported” | WhatsApp detected VoIP or unsupported line |
“Verification failed” or no SMS/Call received | Number blocked or flagged as non-mobile |
⚠️ Recommendations #
- Do not attempt repeated verifications with a VoIP number — this can flag your number permanently.
- Consider porting your VoIP number to a mobile line if WhatsApp use is business-critical.
- Work with a BSP if API-level messaging and automation are required.
