# Why Banks Cannot Verify Your Phone Number & What To Do About It

---

# 📘 KB Article:

**Applies To:** Dataphone Customers, Business Owners, Individuals

---

## 🧾 Overview

If your bank or financial institution informs you that they **cannot verify your phone number**, the issue is usually **not related to Dataphone or your phone service provider**. Instead, banks typically verify phone numbers through **third-party data aggregators like LexisNexis**, which pull information from public and official records—not directly from your telecom provider.

---

## ⚠️ Important Note from Dataphone

> **Dataphone does not have the legal or physical ability to add, remove, or change your phone number information in LexisNexis or similar databases.**
>
>
>
> These records are controlled by external data sources such as government filings, credit bureaus, public records, and business directories. You (the customer) must update or confirm your information directly with these sources.

---

## 🔧 Why Your Bank Checks LexisNexis

- Banks and lenders rely on **LexisNexis** and other data aggregators to:
  - Verify your identity
  - Confirm your contact details
  - Check business legitimacy (for business accounts)

If LexisNexis does not have your current phone number on record, the bank **may flag the number as unverifiable**, even if your phone service is fully active and functioning.

## 📝 How to Get Your Number Listed in LexisNexis

### Quick Summary:

1. Make sure your phone number is registered in:
   - **Dun & Bradstreet (D&B)**
   - **Yellow Pages, Yelp, and other public directories**
   - Your **Secretary of State business filing** (for businesses)
   - Utility and public service accounts in your name
2. Submit a data request or correction via the official LexisNexis portal:

## ❌ What Dataphone Can’t Do

- Dataphone **cannot submit updates or corrections** to LexisNexis or other verification services on your behalf.
- Your **phone service is active and working correctly** regardless of these third-party data listings.
- The bank’s verification process is **independent of your telecom provider**.
